1. On June 3, in advance of the public release of the 2008
TIP Report, POLOFF delivered reftel talking points and
provided the text of the TIP Report narrative for Guatemala
to Luis Carranza, Director for Multilateral Policy at the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Embassy will place an op-ed in
local daily "La Hora" and post the report, in English and
Spanish, on its website after the official rollout.
2. As part of Embassy's ongoing efforts to highlight the
issue of human trafficking and to advance anti-trafficking
efforts in Guatemala, the Ambassador will provide opening
remarks next week at Guatemala's first National Congress on
Trafficking in Persons sponsored by NGO "Asociacion Nuestros
Ahijados," which provides shelter and services to trafficked
victims and homeless children. The three-day (June 11-13)
conference is expected to draw an estimated 700 participants,
including senior government officials, civil society leaders,
members of the diplomatic corps, and representatives of
international organizations.
