(S) Acting Political/Economic Chief delivered reftel demarche to Masudur Rahman, Director, Americas Wing, and Samia Anjum, Senior Assistant Secretary, Americas Wing, of Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). Rahman said he was unaware of ties between al-Qaida and Harakat ul-Jihad-i-Islami (HUJI-B) as required for a UNSC 1267 designation. Pol/Econ Chief referred Rahman and Anjum to the background information provided reftel. Rahman said the MFA would consider our request. Post will report any additional response as soon as it is forthcoming, but recommends the Department consider approaching the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington and the Bangladesh Mission to the United Nations on this matter as well.
