1. (C) Arab League (AL) Disarmament Department Director Wael
Al-Assad told us April 21 that AL SYG Moussa's April 17
meeting with Ambassador Schulte in Vienna (reftel) was "very
good, open and frank." He said that after an AL draft
resolution for the fall IAEA GC is circulated shortly, the
Arab League will be interested in hearing U.S. and European
suggestions for alternate language. Al-Assad said that the
Arab League is not interested in "aggressive language," and
is therefore prepare to drop the word "threat" from the
language of the resolution.
2. (C) In a separate meeting April 22, MFA Disarmament
Department Director Aly Sirry told us that in addition to the
Arab League resolution, Egypt would introduce its own
resolution on the Middle East at the IAEA GC. He said that
Egypt plans to begin consultations on its resolution in
Vienna following the April 28-May 9 NPT PrepCom in Geneva.
Sirry claimed there would not be any linkage between the
Egyptian and AL resolutions.
