(C) On April 9, MFA Palestinian Affairs Director Badr
Abdelatty told us that the GOE believes Israel should do more
to deliver gas and diesel supplies into Gaza in order to
reduce tensions and decrease the potential for a border
breach into Egypt. Abdelatty said the GOE realizes its new
border wall could not repel a breach attempt. He also told
us the MFA wants the Egyptian public to know that the GOE is
working to provide humanitarian aid to Gaza and is taking a
hard rhetorical line against another border breach. On April
9, the official news agency MENA called Egypt's borders "a
red line," saying, "Egypt will not take lightly the
protection of its frontiers against any attempt to violate
them." The MFA issued an April 9 press statement that the
GOE would respond to any attempt to breach its borders with a
"firm stand." Opposition Al-Wafd and aggressive
pro-government Rose Al-Yousef both reported that the GOE will
counter any border breach seriously.
