REASONS: 1.4 (B) and (D)
1. (U) President Mubarak, touring Upper Egypt on January 13,
demanded implementation of the steps delineated in the Arab
League statement of January 6. He called upon the Lebanese
people to end their disagreements for the sake of their
country. He said that if the current crisis continues that
Lebanon will be "lost." Mubarak predicted a "dangerous
situation" for countries "surrounding Lebanon" if the
situation is not resolved soon.
2. (C) On January 13 MFA Cabinet Advisor Nazih Neggary told
us that the GOE will continue to press publicly for
implementation of the Arab League steps, but he did not
expect the GOE would make another public reference to Syria
in connection with Lebanon (as President Mubarak had in late
December - reftel). He assessed that Syria understands that
the pressure is on for a resolution of the Lebanese political
impasse will continue, and that additional direct public
criticism of the SARG now may be counter-productive right now.
