(S) We delivered reftel points and non-paper to MFA Deputy
Disarmament Director Ahmed Al-Shandalawy July 2, and apprised
him that we had been in touch with Customs Commissioner Ahmed
Seoudi and Special Counselor to the Finance Minister Galal
Abo el Fetouh regarding this issue. Shandalawy told us that
he is confident that Customs will strictly regulate Egypt's
ports, and said that the MFA would be glad to forward any
communications from Customs on this issue to the Embassy.
Customs officials thanked us for the consultation and noted
that they fully understand the commitments implied under
Resolution 1803. They said the Customs and maritime security
people would follow the activities of IRISL, if any, in Egypt
and would inspect as appropriate.
