(C) During the Ambassador's introductory call on Defense
Minister Tantawi June 19, the Minister said that compensating
the victim's family in the Global Patriot incident is a
"political issue" for the United States, "not a financial
issue." The Minister advised the Ambassador that the United
States needs to view the payment as compensation not just to
the victim's family, but to the "Egyptian people." He added
that the image of the United States in Egypt is "at stake" in
this case. The Ambassador apologized for the tragic incident
and told the Minister that the U.S. is working to complete a
package aimed at minimizing negative fallout and that would
take care of the victim's family.
