MONTENEGRO
¶1. (SBU) During a meeting on October 9, MFA Security and
Non-proliferation Department Head Vilmos Hamikus asked PolOff
to forward Hungary's desire to serve as the Contact Lead
Nation in Montenegro. Commenting that "Hungary has no nasty
roots in the region," he stated that Hungary has a special
priority in the Western Balkans.
¶2. (SBU) Underscoring the Hungarian assistance provided as
the Contact Nation for Croatia in their lead-up to NATO
membership, Hamikus stated, "we were successful in Zagreb, in
particular with our special expertise in referendums."
Noting three potential Contact Nation options proposed for
Hungary - Montenegro, Bosnia-Hercegovina or Macedonia -
Hamikus stated Montenegro is their number one choice and the
GOH looks for U.S. support.
