1.(C) Pol/Econ Chief delivered reftel demarche to Drahomir
Stos of the MFA's Asia, Africa and Oceana Division on August

8. Stos confirmed Slovak support for more effective and
broader EU sanctions against Burma. However, he expressed
skepticism about the likelihood of additional sanctions in
the near-term, adding that the Burmese regime was quite
facile in adjusting to each new measure. Stos was interested
in how the U.S. would implement the JADE Act and appreciated
U.S. efforts to ensure that the sanctions would not impede
the flow of humanitarian aid in the wake of Nargis. He also
added that the GOS was looking for ways to bring greater
focus to the situation in Burma, including through its new
seat on the UN Human Rights Council.
