1. (S) Global Affairs officer delivered ref A nonpaper March
14 to German MFA Export Control Division Desk Officer Nancy
Reck. Reck was familiar with the case, but said she did not
have any information beyond what had been reported in the
media. Reck noted that because of Germany's strict data
protection laws, prosecutors are generally "very tight
lipped" about ongoing investigations. Prosecutors typically
do not discuss details of cases with Government officials,
let alone the press.
2. (S) Reck undertook to share reftel information with the
German interagency export control working group and said she
would pass along any response, as well as information she
might receive from the German prosecutors handling the case.
We will continue to follow up with the MFA and other German
agencies about the possibility of sharing information on this
case with the UN Sanctions Committee, as well as the IAEA and
NSG. Post will report any substantive German response septel.
