(SBU) Serbian MFA Human Rights Counselor Marina Ivanovic told us
on May 22 that the Serbian government was disappointed that
Serbia was not elected to the Human Rights Council (HRC). She
said the government remained committed to the human rights
issues that the HRC pursued and would consider HRC candidacy
again. Ivanovic agreed that human rights in Belarus and other
countries remained a concern. She said it was Serbia's
position that the HRC should adopt a cooperative approach
centered on an open mutual dialogue with countries with severe
human rights problems, rather than political pressure, which had
proved to be an ineffective tool.
