(SBU) Outreach to advocates for democratic reform and human
rights is a core part of Embassy Belgrade's activities to help
Serbia become a stable and prosperous democracy. The Embassy
maintains frequent contact with human rights activists, ensuring
them of Embassy support for the role of civil society. Post
encourages the government, in private and in public, to protect
human rights activists and journalists and to widen the space
for civil society in general. Embassy staff give speeches and
organize public events that demonstrate the importance of human
rights and democracy and the contributions of activists to
society. Post also conducts assistance programs to strengthen
civil society. There are approximately ten asylum-seekers from
un-free nations living in Serbia who receive USG support via the
UNHCR.
