1. (C) POLOFF on March 12 conveyed to MFA reftel points
urging China to support and engage new Special Representative
of the UN Secretary General for Afghanistan Ambassador Kai
Eide. MFA International Organizations and Conferences
Department UN Division Deputy Director Sun Xiaobo said the
United States "can rest assured of strong Chinese support"
for Ambassador Eide. Sun said China had as a UNSC permanent
member supported Eide's appointment and would continue that
support. Afghanistan is an important issue for China and
China had particularly noted the Afghan Government's own
support for Eide, Sun said.
