the future of the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE)
and the possibility of targeted sanctions on Eritrea. MFA
International Organizations and Conferences Department UN
Division Deputy Director Yao Shaojun said China regards a
continued UN presence in Eritrea and Ethiopia as "vitally
important." China agrees it is important that Eritrea
cooperate with the UN mission, but China does not support
sanctions and doubts sanctions would be effective. The best
way to enlist Eritrea's cooperation, Yao said, is for the
international community to engage intensively with Eritrea
and convince Eritrean leaders that a continued UN presence is
in Eritrea's interest. Yao said that China would be open to
new ideas about restructuring the UN mission.
