1. (C) POLOFF on January 4 expressed to MFA IO Human Rights
official Xu Jing the Embassy's concerns over the reported
mistreatment of jailed activist Guo Feixiong, who purportedly
was beaten by a fellow inmate on December 18 and is currently
staging a hunger strike (reftel). POLOFF stated that Guo's
alleged mistreatment is entirely inappropriate and requested
Xu to have the Chinese Government take steps to stop the
mistreatment.
2. (C) Ms. Xu replied that, although she had no information
on the reported mistreatment of Guo Feixiong, she would
convey the Embassy's concerns to her superiors.
