1. (C) PolOff conveyed ref A points regarding developments in
Chad and Sudan's role to MFA Department of International
Organizations UN Division Attache Diao Jinshu February 14.
PolOff's demarche followed up on the Ambassador's points to
AFM Liu Jieyi on February 4 urging China to press Sudan to
halt its support of rebel groups in neighboring Chad (ref B).
Diao said she will convey our request to her superiors and
relay any response to the Embassy. Diao said China raised
this issue with Sudan. Unwilling to divulge much information
regarding China's discussions with Sudan, Diao said simply
that China urged Sudan to "be friendly" in its relations with
Chad.
