¶1. (C) PolOff on August 20 delivered to MFA reftel points
asking China to approach the UN Secretariat in support of
holding a fifth round of talks on the Western Sahara before
the end of the year and to express support for retaining
Peter Van Walsum as the Secretary General's Personal Envoy on
this issue. MFA International Organizations and Conferences
Department UN Division Acting Director Sun Xiaobo said that
China shares the view that it is important to push for more
progress on the Western Sahara, as stated in several UNSC
resolutions. However, Sun said, he would need to consult
with China's UN Mission in New York before committing to
approaching the UN Secretariat. Sun did not say specifically
whether China supports retaining Van Walsum as Personal
Envoy. However, Sun noted that it is important that the
Personal Envoy enjoy the trust of all concerned parties.
