1. (C) Poloff on July 2 delivered to MFA reftel points urging
China to support a UNSC resolution on Zimbabwe. MFA
International Organizations and conferences Department UN
Division Counselor Sun Minqin said that China is also
concerned by events in Zimbabwe. China's position is that
the international community should "constructively encourage
the two sides to resolve the dispute themselves." The UN,
Sun said, should show deep respect for the views of the
Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African
Union (AU). PolOff replied that the draft resolution
reiterates the views expressed by the SADC and the AU and
that President Mugabe's violent attacks on the opposition
call for strong UNSC action as well as "constructive
encouragement."
