UNAMI COMPOUND
REF: A. SECSTATE 112716
B. BAGHDAD 3465
Classified By: Ambassador Ryan C. Crocker for Reasons 1.4 (b) and (d).
1. (C) UNAMI SRSG Staffan de Mistura told us (and the Prime
Minister's office confirms) that the Prime Minister has
agreed to contribute $25 million towards the construction of
the new UNAMI compound in 2009. The GOI will also pay an
additional $25 million in 2010 for a total of $50 million
overall, meeting the U.N. request to fund 50 percent of the
expected cost of the new compound.
2. (C) De Mistura said that while some in the U.N.
continued to press for the full $50 million now, he
considered the two-tranche commitment a very good outcome and
would so report to the ACABQ meeting this week in New York.
We agree.
