1. (U) On June 27, 2008 Embassy transmitted reftel dipnote
on the U.S. candidacies for the Universal Postal Union (UPU)
to the Greek MFA. PolOff also delivered the note and
accompanying points to Embassy Attache Giorgos Panagiotidis
of the D1 Directorate for the International Organizations.
Panagiotidis said he would provide the materials to the
Hellenic Post. He commented that Greece will support the
U.S. candidacies, "one way or angther." He noted that Greece
also intends to put forth candidates for Postal Operations
Council (POC) in the UPU and inquired as to whether or not
the USG engages in any type of reciprocal support regarding
candidacies. We responded that the U.S. does not tend to
engage in reciprocal support for candidacies, but that we
would be happy to receive any further information on a Greek
candidate for the POC and that we would ensure that a Greek
candidacy was carefully reviewed.
