1. (SBU) This is another in a series of weekly reports on PKK
violence in Turkey. Our primary source is the Turkish General Staff
(TGS) website, which documents contacts and clashes with the PKK, as
well as casualties incurred.
2. (U) During the April 1-7, 2008 reporting period, one village
guard was killed and three were injured in an April 5 explosion in
Akcay, Sirnak Province, attributed to the PKK. The total number of
security force casualties for the year through April 7, 2008 was 24
killed and 26 injured.
3. (U) During the same period, seven PKK terrorists were killed, ten
were captured and five surrendered. According to official TGS
website figures, through the first week of April, the number of PKK
militants killed this year was 293, the number of those captured was
80, and the number of those who surrendered was 43.
4. (U) Civilian casualties for the year through the end of the first
week of April remain at ten killed, with another 49 wounded. Dozens
more civilians were wounded during March 21-23 Nevruz celebrations
around the country.
