1. (SBU) This is another in a series of weekly reports on PKK
violence in Turkey. Our primary source is the Turkish General Staff
(TGS) website, which documents contacts and clashes with the PKK, as
well as casualties incurred.
2. (U) During the December 1-7, 2008 reporting period, no security
official was killed or injured. The total number of security force
casualties for the year through December 7, 2008, was 140 killed and
247 injured.
3. (U) During the same period, three PKK terrorists were killed in
clashes in Sirnak Province on December 4 and 6. Three were captured
and six surrendered. According to official TGS website figures,
through the first week of December, the number of PKK militants
killed this year was 657, the number of those captured was 161, and
the number of those who surrendered was 161.
4. (U) During the reporting period two civilians were killed by an
IED in Cukurca, Hakkari Province on December 2, and by a landmine in
Agri Province on December 5. Another two civilians were injured in
the Agri landmine explosion. The total number of civilian
casualties for the year through the end of the fourth week of
November, was 48 killed, with another 252 wounded.
