REF: ANKARA 1136
Classified By: Ambassador Wilson for reasons 1.4 (b) and (d)
1. (C) MFA Deputy Undersecretary Sinirlioglu told the
Ambassador June 23 Turkey followed up with the Iranians on
the updated P5 1 package EU that foreign policy chief Solana
presented during his recent visit to Iran. FM Babacan met in
Kampala June 20 on the margins of the Organization of the
Islamic Conference (OIC) summit with Iranian FM Mottaki.
Babacan strongly urged Iran to accept the proposal.
Sinirloglu said the Turks tried to "frighten" the Iranians,
presumably drawing from Secretary Rice,s strong remarks to
Babacan earlier this month on the subject. Mottaki said
Tehran would respond in four weeks.
2. (C) Separately, we have learned that MFA Undersecretary
Apakan is in Tehran for consultations June 23-24 and expect
he will take up this matter.
