1. (U) The Turkish General Staff (TGS) released the following
statement on January 18:
BEGIN TGS STATEMENT (Unofficial Embassy translation)
No. BA-09/08
Evaluations regarding the results of the AIR operations
Turkish Armed Forces carried out against the PKK/KONGRA-GEL
terror organization in northern Iraq on January 15, 2008
still continue.
A total of eight target groups (approximately 60 targets)
consisting of four in the Zap-Shivi region, two in the
Avashin-Basyan region, and two in the Hakurk region, which
were solely used by the terrorist organization, were attacked
by our fighter jets during the mentioned operation.
In the AIR operation, in which the most advanced target
acquisition and fire control systems were used, all
predetermined targets were successfully hit.
Within this context, five command centers, two communication
centers, 15 training centers, 12 logistic centers, 18
shelters/hideouts, two anti-aircraft positions (with their
crews) and four arms/ammunition depots of the terrorist
organization PKK were destroyed.
Necessary activities to identify terrorist losses are carried
out through various means.
The Turkish Armed Forces are determined to continue
operations within the framework of the assigned authorities.
The public is respectfully informed.
END TGS STATEMENT
2. (S) Battle damage assessment continues to be compiled by
the Ankara Coordination Cell (ACC). Initial assessments
indicate six of eight target sets struck on January 15
sustained damage but we cannot confirm destruction of
specific targets mentioned in the TGS announcement.
