1. (U) Jordan is expected to send an official delegation to WIREC
2008, but needs additional time to finalize its participation. The
Ambassador has conveyed the invitation to Foreign Minister Al-Bashir
per refs A and B. Additionally, through a diplomatic note to the
relevant ministries, the Embassy has provided guidance on delegation
composition and registration procedures. Emboffs have also been
liaising with the Minister of Environment, the Secretary General of
the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, and the head of the
National Energy Research Center to follow up on Jordanian
participation in WIREC. USAID will fund the participation of one to
two working-level contacts from Jordan, if required.
2. (SBU) Minister of Environment Khaled Irani told ESTH Officer
February 5 that he is very keen to attend WIREC 2008, but noted the
GOJ usually limits the number of ministers of any delegation to one.
Irani planned to discuss the matter with the Minister of Energy and
Mineral Resources to determine appropriate representation. Post
expects to receive further information on the composition of the GOJ
delegation within two weeks.
