(C) Ambassador delivered on December 14 reftel demarche to
Jordan,s Foreign Minister Salah Al-Bashir. Bashir responded
that Jordan supported the resolution but was looking for the
flexibility to add language on issues such as settlement
activity. The Ambassador explained that opening the door for
Jordan to propose changes would invite other countries to the
do the same and almost certainly result in a lack of
agreement and the failure of the resolution. The resolution,
he emphasized, would help preserve the current status of the
negotiations and was essential to advancing the process.
Bashir agreed to support the resolution as drafted.
