(SBU) Poloff delivered reftel demarche on January 28 to Khalid Takhayneh from the Foreign Ministry's International Organizations Department. Takhayneh said he received last week the UK's invitation to the February 7 Proliferation Security Initiative meeting in London, and that his office had recommended that Amb. Jamal Shamayleh, Director of the Private Office of Foreign Minister Salaheddin al-Bashir, represent Jordan at the event. The final decision on representation will be taken by the FM, but Takhayneh suggested if there were external funding for travel and expenses it would be easier to push the recommendation through. Takhayneh noted that parliament members are placing pressure on the government to curtail the number of trips of this sort, given their high cost. Poloff suggested that the MFA contact the UK Embassy regarding potential funding. Separately, local UKEMB PolCouns confirmed that HMG had offered to cover travel and lodging for the Jordanian delegation. ¶2.
