SUBJECT: ALGERIA EXPRESSES PASSIVE SUPPORT FOR SADC TALKS
ON ZIMBABWE
REF: STATE 79617
Classified By: CDA, a.i. Thomas F. Daughton; reasons 1.4 (b, d).
(C) Charge delivered reftel demarche to MFA Director General
for Africa (A/S equivalent) Lounes Magramane during an August
13 meeting and outlined U.S. support for a solution that
respects the March 29 electoral outcome in Zimbabwe.
Magramane tried to underscore Algerian engagement on Zimbabwe
by pointing out that President Bouteflika had attended the
July Africa Union meeting in Sharm el Sheikh and participated
in the discussion of the issue. Despite having just finished
a meeting with the South African ambassador, however,
Magramane made no substantive comment beyond expressing
Algeria's general support for the process led by President
Mbeki on behalf of SADC.
