1. (C) Poloff delivered reftel demarche to the MFA February
13, urging Algerian support for Ambassador William Swing's
candidacy to be Director General of the International
Organization for Migration. He also asked for a GoA contact
person with whom Ambassador Swing could discuss his candidacy
directly. Rachid Ouali, MFA's U.S. desk officer, offered no
immediate reaction, but promised to follow up with the
appropriate MFA offices and respond.
2. (C) Ambassador separately raised the Swing candidacy with
MFA Director General for Multilateral Affairs (A/S
equivalent) Bladehane on February 16. Bladehane said he was
aware that Swing was the candidate who enjoyed USG support.
He said the GoA had not yet made a decision about which
candidate to support.
