(C) We delivered reftel demarche to MFA Chief of Disarmament
and Nonproliferation Fethi Metref November 23 during a
discussion of the November 18 IAEA reports on the Iranian and
Syrian nuclear programs. Metref said that Algeria continues
to support IAEA's dialogue with Iran on its nuclear program
and stressed that efforts should be made to ensure talks
continue. Metref, however, provided little substantive
comment on the upcoming IAEA Board of Governors meetings. He
explained that before drafting its statement on Iran or
considering possible actions in response to report findings
on Syrian nuclear activities, the Algerian delegation would
need time to digest the conclusions of each report. Metref
assured us that he would contact us with any subsequent
response to our questions.
