1. The Federal Ministry of Energy (Power) has informed post of the
composition of the official GON delegation to the March 2008
Washington International Renewable Energy Conference (WIREC). The
Ministry of Energy (Power) sees the role of renewable energy as
important to Nigeria. In the power sector the country is looking
for solutions in distributed generation and specifically adding
generation from renewables to their burdened electricity grid.
Other ministries, such as agriculture and science, are eager to
launch projects in bio-mass and bio fuels.
2. The Nigerian Delegation to WIREC is headed by the Honorable
Minister of State for Energy (Power) Mrs. Fatima Balarabe IBRAHIM.
The Minister of State will be accompanied by:
-Engr. Sanusi Garba, Director (Power)
-Dr. Ransome Owan, Chairman, Nigeria Electricity Regulatory
Commission (NERC)
-Prof. A.S. Sambo, Director-General, Energy Commission of Nigeria
-Engr. Sam Gekpe, Managing Director, Rural Electrification Agency
-Alh. Kabiru Yeldu, Special Assistant to the Minister (Power)
-Hajiya Mariya Waziri, Personal Asst to the Minister (Power)
In addition, Prof. Iloeje, Executive Commissioner, NERC, and
Obiagili Alor, Renewable Energy Analyst, NERC, will also attend.
3. Post will work with the Ministry to assist with completion of
visa and conference registration processes. Post expects that GON
will update its Renewables Pledge following the Delegation's
participation in WIREC 2008.
