SUBJECT: NIGERIA: DEMARCHES DELIVERED ON REJECTING RUSSIAN
RECOGNITION OF SOUTH OSSETIA AND ABKHAZIA
REF: A. SECSTATE 90978
B. SECSTATE 91894
Classified By: A/DCM Walter Pflaumer for reasons 1.4. (b & d).
(C) Poloff delivered reftel demarches to A. A. Adepoju,
Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Europe Division,
who had no substantive GON response at the moment, but
promised one in the near future. Post believes, however,
that, absent a collective decision from the AU to do so, the
GON will not be inclined to recognize Abkhazia or South
Ossetia. Nigeria's experience with the attempted secession
of "Biafra" during the 1967-70 civil war makes it
particularly averse to countenancing such actions. Post will
keep the Department informed of any further GON response on
the matter.
