1. (U) Charge d'Affaires briefly delivered reftel demarche to
Minister of Foreign Affairs Ojo Maduekwe at the conclusion of
a previously scheduled meeting on August 8. Charge noted
approvingly President Yar'Adua's public denouncement on
August 6, which stated "Nigeria would not recognize any
change of government through unconstitutional means."
Maduekwe acknowledged receipt of the demarche. Post will
report on any additional public statements made by President
Yar'Adua or other senior GON officials regarding the
situation in Mauritania.
