(C) On July 25, the Ambassador took advantage of a previously
scheduled meeting between Under Secretary for Economic
Affairs Jeffery and Nigerian Foreign Minister Ojo Maduekwe to
present reftel demarche concerning the forthcoming talks
between ZANU-PF and the MDC; she left the Minister a
non-paper drawn from reftel. The Ambassador stressed that
any negotiated result needed to reflect the will of the
Zimbabwean people as expressed in the March 29 elections.
The Zimbabweans deseved the democratic transition they voted
for. Maduekwe accepted the non-paper but offered no
substantive reply.
