(C) Ambassador reviewed ref A plans for a contact group meeting on
piracy with Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed (AbZ) December 21.
The Minister requested that the dates be cited in a formal diplomatic
note (which Post sent December 22). Acknowledging the January 13-14
invitation to the contact group in New York, AbZ said the UAE sought
to make a "maritime" contribution to the anti-piracy effort as
opposed to participation with ground troops in Somalia, partly due to
potentially expanded land force operations in Afghanistan. These
points match generally with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed
(MbZ's) suggested contribution of "a ship" on December 14 (ref B).
The nature of any naval deployment remains under discussion within
the UAEG.
