( C ) DCM delivered ref points on May 9, 2007, to Assistant
Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Pjer
Simunovic. Simunovic agreed with the importance of supporting
good candidates for the Human Rights Council and said Croatia
will not support the candidacy of Belarus for membership on
the UN Human Rights Council. Croatia will support Slovenia as
a candidate. He expressed a willingness to support a third
country candidate on the merits of its human rights record
should one announce its intentions to compete. Croatia had
contemplated running for this position, however decided to
focus its efforts towards its candidacy for non-permanent
membership on the UN Security Council in 2008.
