(C) Political External Chief delivered Ref B letter from PDAS Volker and DAS DiCarlo February 9 to MFA European Department Director for forwarding to MFA U/S Krzysztof Szczerski, who is both the current Political Director and the U/S supervising EU and European issues. Chmielewski indicated the MFA would likely issue a statement in support of the Ahtisaari report following the GAERC meeting. DCM will call on Szczerski February 13 following the February 12 GAERC. ¶2. (C) COMMENT. As previously reported, the GOP shares the U.S. position on the Ahtisaari report and can be expected to express strong support for Ahtisaari at the GAERC and in its subsequent public statement. Given her interest in U.S. views (Ref B),we expect that FM Fotyga will have a copy of the Volker-DiCarlo letter in her briefing book at the GAERC. END COMMENT. HILLAS
