1. (S) Acting EconPol Counselor delivered reftel background
and talking points on July 6 to Ralph Scheide, Head of the
MFA's Middle East and Africa Division (A/S-equivalent).
EconPol Counselor urged Austria to approach regional Arab
governments to put diplomatic pressure on the SARG to do more
to prevent foreign fighters from transiting through Syria.
Scheide said that the Austrian Embassy in Damascus has also
expressed concern with this issue. Scheide promised to
consult within the MFA about the possibility of a joint
demarche.
