1. (SBU) EconPolCouns delivered reftel demarche on May 15 to
Hannes Porias, the Austrian MFA's assistant secretary-level
Director for Central and Eastern Europe.
2. (C) Porias said Austria supports the Ahtisaari package
completely, and would like to see as clear a resolution as
possible emerge from the UN Security Council process.
3. (C) Porias noted that Russia was getting "tougher and
tougher" on Kosovo. Nevertheless, the Russians have been
very careful not to say that they would veto a resolution.
That must mean something, he said, because the Russians tend
to send "signals" in the way they craft their comments.
4. (C) Porias said he would be in Belgrade May 15-16. A
former Austrian Ambassador in Belgrade, Porias said he was
very interested in seeing how the new government was shaping
up.
