1. Embassy wishes to bring to the attention of relevant USG
agencies that we have received information from the Holy See
concerning the XXII International Conference on "The Pastoral
Care of Sick Elderly People", which will take place in Vatican
City's Synod Hall from November 15-17, 2007. The conference will
focus on the following considerations as they relate to health
care for the elderly: demographics, globalisation, techological
change, legislation, environment, interreligious dialogue,
media, and pastoral considerations.
2. The conference features prominent international speakers,
including Cardinal Javier Lozano Barragan, President of the
Pontifical Council for Health Care Workers; Wangari Muta Maathai
of Kenya, the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize winner; and numerous
academics and health care officials from Europe, Asia, Latin
America, and the World Health Organization. Simultaneous
translation will be provided in English, Spanish, French, and
Italian. Registration costs 100 euros and is due by October 30.
