SUBJECT: ACTION REQUEST:RE-APPOINTMENT OF THE USG TO THE
COMMITTEE ON CONFERENCES
1.(U) This is an urgent action request. See para 2. The
appointment of members to the Committee on Conferences (CoC)
will be held on Thursday November 15, 2007. The USG is
concluding the last year of its three year appointment, which
will expire on December 31, 2007. The USG is eligible for
immediate re-appointment for another three year term.
2.(U) Action request. The CoC, consisting of 21 members from
the five regional groups, is responsible for all matters
relating to conference servicing at the UN. Conference
services account for nearly 20 percent of the UN regular
budget. As the major contributor to the UN, the U.S. takes
great interest in ensuring these resources are well spent and
are consistent with reform initiatives to ensure effective
and efficient delivery of services. Accordingly, USUN
recommends that the Department authorize USUN to submit the
USG candidature for the CoC for the 2008-10 term, as soon as
possible. USUN proposes to notify the Chairman (Turkey) of
the Western European and Other States Group (WEOG) of the USG
decision to present its candidature for re-appointment to the
CoC. The next WEOG meeting is scheduled for later this week.
USUN will also send a diplomatic note to the
Secretary-General, if appropriate, submitting the USG
SIPDIS
nomination for transmission to the General Assembly.
