SUMMARY AND COMMENT: On Friday, February 9, 2007, Chef de Cabinet Vijay Nambiar announced that Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon had accepted the resignation of fifteen senior officials (9 at the Under-Secretary-General level, 6 at the Assistant Secretary-General level). Nambiar also announced the appointment of four officials at the Under-Secretary-General level. Additional appointments are expected at the Assistant Secretary-General level, to be followed by the appointment of Special Representatives. Identifying and placing Americans in senior positions where we do not lead the office or agency remains an important USG objective. The announcement that an American will serve as Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, represents an unique opportunity for the USG to identify key senior level positions outside of DPA and submit qualified, competitive candidates for consideration. The Mission has identified DPI, where a Japanese candidate has been appointed, as an important opportunity, and requests the Department to identify candidates. END SUMMARY AND COMMENT. ¶3.
