(U) Japan "appreciates" the agreement between Palestinian
factions reached in Mecca and hopes it will lead to a
ceasation of violence and the formation of a new government
that can resume efforts with Israel to advance the peace
process, according to an official MOFA statement released
February 9. Japan also expressed gratitude to Saudi Arabia
for hosting the talks. Embassy Tokyo Officer February 13
shared reftel talking points with MOFA First Middle East
Division Director Hideo Sato who received them without making
further comment.
