September 19 and followed up September 28 with MOFA Human
Rights Division Principal Deputy Director Takako Ito and
Human Rights Division Officer Makoto Tanabe. Tanabe said
that Japan had been approached by multiple countries seeking
support for their UNCAT candidates. The decision will be
made by Human Rights Division Director Tetsuya Kimura, he
added. Japan "always makes its decision at the last minute,"
noted Ito, who did not feel that a call to MOFA Ambassador in
charge of UN affairs Masato Kitera would be useful.
