SUBJECT: TOKYO MEDIA REACTION - UNREST IN PAKISTAN
LEAD STORIES: Two leading national papers front-paged
plans by the UN Security Council to adopt a new
resolution embracing the US-led maritime security
operation in the Indian Ocean at Japan's prodding.
"Turmoil over Idea of Musharraf Relinquishing Top Army
Post" Islamabad correspondent Sato of the
top-circulation, moderate Yomiuri wrote (9/19):
"Pakistani President Musharraf has hinted through his
attorney at the possibility of giving up his post of
Army chief of staff if he is reelected president later
this month. The move is meant to serve as a concession
to the opposition bloc, which has been critical of the
fact that Musharraf has held the two key portfolios
simultaneously. The opposition camp, however, is
determined to call on Musharraf to give up his Army
position prior to the election. In view of the
intensified strife between Musharraf and the opposition
and his weakening grip on power, the uncertainty
surrounding Pakistan is bound to increase....
Musharraf's intention can be interpreted as an
expression of his determination never to give up his
true source of power unless his reelection is assured.
