LEAD STORIES: Most Tuesday morning papers front-paged the
upgrading of the Defense Agency Tuesday to the Ministry
of Defense.
1. "Japan Should Adopt Strategic Diplomacy Toward China"
The moderate Tokyo Shimbun editorialized (1/9): "...Japan
and China have established close economic ties similar to
the US-Japan economic relationship. Both Japan and China
are opposed to North Korea's nuclear test. The removal of
nuclear weapons from the Korean Peninsula would eliminate
a nuclear threat posed to both nations. A reciprocal
strategic relationship would involve cooperating to
maximize their mutual interests, and it is imperative for
both sides to speak their minds. China, which is hopeful
of reunification with Taiwan, welcomes North Korea's role
in attracting the presence of US troops in South Korea
and thus provides Pyongyang with massive relief and
support. Japan and the US need to urge China to exert its
influence on the DPRK.... Should China be tempted to
retake Taiwan by force, the peace and prosperity of
China, Taiwan, and the rest of East Asia would be
threatened. Japan not only needs to strengthen its
alliance with the US but also should push China to
peacefully resolve the Taiwan issue."
