1. (C) Acting DCM Meserve met separately on January 25,
2007 with Hisao Inoue, Executive Assistant to the Prime
Minister, and with Chikao Kawai, Deputy Vice Foreign
Minister. Meserve conveyed to both the points contained in
reftel regarding remarks critical of U.S. policy made on
January 24 by Defense Minister Kyuma. Both Inoue and Kawai
said that Kyuma's remarks had been "regrettable" and reported
that Prime Minister Abe had since publicly reiterated Japan's
support for U.S. and coalition efforts in Japan.

2. (C) Charge has an appointment with Vice Minister of
Defense Moriya on Friday, January 26, at which time he will
deliver the same reftel message.

3. (SBU) At a news conference following today's (January 25)
Extraordinary Diet Session, Kyuma expressed support for
coalition efforts in Iraq without directly apologizing for
his earlier critical comments. He is reported to have said
"Regardless of whether Bush's decision was wrong, my position
is consistent with the Japanese government's position to
support the war in Iraq. As long as that was the decision
made, I will follow it."
