LEAD STORIES: Monday morningQs conservative Sankei front-
paged a report from Beijing that China has deployed a
large number of its ultramodern QJian-10Q fighters, which
it says have equal combat capabilities to those of US and
European main fighters. The daily speculated that China
is eager to change the "military balance" in the Taiwan
Strait and with India with the deployment.

1. "Tensions Reemerge Among Iraqis in Baghdad Over New US
Military Deployment" Cairo correspondent Hajime Yoshioka
of the liberal Asahi wrote (1/22): "About 10 days after
the US decided to deploy around 21,000 more US troops in
Iraq, the US military is again deploying units in the
Iraqi capital to contain sectarian strife. Due to this,
new tensions are building up between Iraqis and US
troops, who have reappeared in the residential districts
of Baghdad to maintain public peace and order in a manner
similar to that following the end of the Iraq war....
After the war, the US military directly maintained peace
and order in Baghdad, sometimes killing, injuring or
restraining innocent Baghdad citizens by mistake,
activating armed insurgents. The US military has,
therefore, switched since the beginning of 2004 to
relocate US military units from Baghdad to suburban
areas. The US military appears to be returning to the old
policy to maintain public peace and order in Baghdad.
While a Sunni Iraqi resident welcomes the US move as an
effective way to contain sectarian strife, the move may
run the risk of inflaming tensions with Iraqi citizens
and triggering more attacks by armed insurgents on US
military troops."
