SUBJECT: MEDIA REACTION - RUSSIA'S ISOLATION AT G-8
SUMMIT - TOKYO
1. LEAD STORIES: All six Friday morning papers gave top
play to an agreement at the G-8 leaders' meeting Thursday
in Heilingendamm, Germany, on the need for substantial
global reductions in -- and consideration of seriously
halving -- greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
2. "Russia Sharply at Odds with US and EU at G-8 Summit"
Heilingendamm correspondent Sakai of business-oriented
Nihon Keizai Shimbun wrote (6/8): "Russia has been
noticeably isolated from the other G-8 members at the
Heilingendamm summit. During his meeting with President
Bush, Russian President Putin tried to overcome this by
making a counterproposal regarding the planned US
deployment of a missile defense (MD) system in Eastern
Europe, but it does not appear that he was able to close
the gap. It has also become clear that Moscow has a view
of democracy different from that of the other seven
members, raising concern that Russia could be an obstacle
to G-8 unity. After the meeting, Putin emphasized that
Russia and the US could settle the MD dispute by agreeing
to work together against possible threats.... The tug-of-
war between the two countries over MD is likely to
continue ahead of the planned US-Russia summit in early
July."
