(C) Per reftel, Embassy met and discussed with MOFA Second
Middle East Division Principal Deputy Director Motosada
Matano the cases of five detained/missing American citizens
in Iran, expressing our gratitude that Foreign Minister Aso
had raised these cases in a general way when he last spoke
with Foreign Minister Mottaki, and requesting further
engagement by Japan with Iranian counterparts. Matano took
note but was not in a position to make any commitments.
Political Officer requested to be notified in the event
Japanese officials do raise these cases in the future.
